Q: Remote controls have a way of disappearing in our family. What’s an alternative to spending a fortune replacing them?

A: If your television or Blu-ray player is Wi-Fi enabled, its manufacturer has probably released an app that will let you use your smartphone as a remote control. (Lose the phone in the sofa? Just call your number to locate it.) Most streaming media players, including the Apple TV, Roku and Amazon Fire TV, can be controlled via an app, too.
