Home » How to » Roku Remote Blinking Green Light (Do This First!)
Many of us rely on Roku for entertainment and information so when any aspect of it starts acting strangely we might get concerned.
One somewhat common problem is when the Roku remote begins to flash a green light. If you started seeing a blinking green light from your Roku remote, it is just an indicator that the remote is attempting to pair with the Roku device.
Why it would do so if you have been using it for a while is a different story, but this is not a problem that requires any major technical solutions.
The fixes for this problem are pretty simple, and the first one on our list is likely to take care of it every time.
Just in case it does not, we will provide a few additional things to fix your Roku remote blinking green light.
Keep in mind some of the fixes below also work when Roku AirPlay is not working or Apple TV is not working on Roku.
A blinking green light on your Roku remote indicates it is attempting to pair. To fix this, pull out the batteries, unplug the TV, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. When you’re at the home screen, put the batteries back in and then press and hold the pair button until it pairs to your TV.
If it doesn’t pair, you might need to repeat this step a few times until your Roku remote successfully pairs with your TV.
The blinking green light is the remote’s available indicator of an issue the remote has with functioning with the primary Roku device.
Since this is essentially the only indicator, it is up to the troubleshooting user to figure out the actual problem.
The problems can range from the remote having low batteries to the Roku device needing urgent system updates, but it is far more likely to be the former than the latter.
Chances are the problem is simple to remedy with the solution being quick and easy provided you have the right pieces and take action accordingly.
The newer Roku models will typically detect that the remote’s batteries are low, and will start indicating as such on the screen, with a message that will inform the user that it’s time to replace the batteries.
If you use Roku frequently, you are unlikely to miss this message. But in case you somehow do, the first and likeliest solution to try is to simply replace the remote’s batteries.
Simply take out the old batteries, wait a few seconds, and then, assuring that the polarities are set correctly, replace the batteries with a new set.
It is recommended that unless you are in a pinch, you don’t replace them with already used batteries, but with fresh ones.
If low batteries are the problem, you do not want your solution to be extremely short-term, just having to deal with it again in a few days.
Once the batteries have been replaced, see if the remote is still flashing the green light. Chances are that it is not. Just make sure you can operate the Roku with the remote at this time and you are good to go.
This is a solution that may seem overwhelmingly obvious, but it does take care of the issues more times than not.
Sometimes the green blinking light indicates a problem with the remote pairing to the Roku device. This is another problem that you can easily solve.
All you need to do is to unplug the Roku from its power source for about 30 seconds. During that time, pop the batteries out of the remote, wait a few seconds, and then put them back in.
At this point, with the Roku off, the blinking green light should return. Once you have plugged the Roku back in, wait for it to run its initialization protocols.
When you arrive on the home screen, get the batteries back into the remote. Make sure that you can navigate around the screen and that the green blinking light is no longer flashing.
This action is basically a way to re-pair the remote with your Roku device.
Checking whether the HDMI connection is not a traditional solution to this problem.
However, some users have reported in Roku forums that the green flashing light stopped once they have unplugged and replugged the HDMI connectors back in from the end on both the Roku device and their TV.
In this case, the green light would stop flashing once the connections are secure. It is a curious method, but if it works to fix your issue, so be it.
The blinking green indicator could also be a sign that your device needs a system update. Typically, most users have their Roku set to update automatically or periodically when an update becomes available.
However, some want more control and say about when a system update runs, so they keep that option off.
If nothing else has worked, try navigating to the System menu and checking what version of software your device has.
If a new update is available, run it. This will update your Roku device and will hopefully get the blinking light to stop.
This is a drastic solution and you should never have to use it for a blinking light on the remote problem.
But if all else fails, you can hard reset your Roku device by pressing the power cycling button or pushing into a pinhole in the back or bottom of your Roku for 10 to 15 seconds.
This will reboot the Roku to its factory settings. Assuming that it is a problem or glitch with the settings, this action should enable you to get back to a state where your remote was functioning accordingly.
Again, you should never have to reach this action to fix this problem. Please keep in mind that this means that the Roku will revert to its pre-usage state.
This means that all apps you installed after setting it up will be gone, all the settings will return to their factory build, and you will need to reenter passwords on all of the applications you use.
If you’ve made it this far and your Roku remote is still blinking green light, you may want to get a new Roku remote from Amazon.
It is extremely cheap to buy a Roku remote these days, and you have tons of options to choose from. The new remote you buy might have some features that you don’t have on your current one.
So save yourself the headache and get a Roku remote replacement. Make sure to read the description, so that the one you buy is compatible with your TV model.
The solution of pulling out batteries is likely to fix your problem. Re-pairing the device should cover the rest.
