Do you own a newer model LG TV from 2018 or later? If so, you’ll probably be excited to know that you can get started with Apple HomeKit, even if you haven’t purchased any HomeKit accessories. That’s right, you can control much of your TV’s functioning with HomeKit on your iPhone or iPad.
Smart TVs have gained some very interesting features in the past few years and thanks to their popularity, TV manufacturers are partnering with Apple to bring features like AirPlay 2 and HomeKit to specific models. To make use of all the HomeKit features, you typically need a home hub like a HomePod, Apple TV, or even just an iPad, but once you have it set up, you can use Siri to turn on/off your TV and even automate its operation with the Home app.
If you have a relatively new model of LG TV (from 2018 onward), or many other smart TV’s, you’ll be pleased to know this is pretty easy to setup.
Before you go ahead with the following procedure, make sure both your TV and the Apple device that you’re using to set up HomeKit are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Next, you need to check if your TV is running the latest firmware since AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support was added via a software update on older models. Once you’re done, just follow the steps below:
That was basically the initial set-up. Your LG TV will now be listed under your Favorite Accessories within the Home app.
If the Home app’s QR code scanner fails to scan the code displayed on your TV, you still have other options to finish the pairing process. You could manually enter the 8-digit set-up code that’s written next to the actual QR code by selecting the option “I Don’t Have a Code or Cannot Scan” in the Home app. Keep in mind that both the devices need to be connected to the same network to complete the pairing process.
Once set up, you will be able to turn on or turn off your LG TV from the Home app, and if you have a Home hub, you’ll be able to get Siri to power it on by saying “Hey Siri, turn on the TV.” You will be able to switch between various input sources or even access your TV settings by simply long-pressing on your TV from the Home app.
Considering you were interested in trying out HomeKit with the TV, you may also want to check out how you can get AirPlay 2 to work on your LG TV too. It’s actually pretty easy and you’ll have no trouble using it, especially if you’ve used AirPlay devices in the past. Note that both AirPlay 2 and HomeKit are only available on a select range of LG televisions from 2018 and newer. To make sure your model is compatible, you can check out this list of supported TVs.
