JERSEY MILLS — An Adams County man was found dead Wednesday morning on his property near here, killed in the last two days while apparently cutting down a large tree close to his cabin, according to Jerold Ross, Lycoming County’s chief deputy coroner. No one witnessed the accident that occurred in the 1400 block of Old Post Office Road in McHenry Township.

Joseph Shoemaker, 66, of Abbottstown, was pronounced dead at the scene of blunt force trauma injuries about 6:15 a.m., Ross said. The victim was stuck in the head when a tree he was cutting fell on top of him, he added. The victim was alone at the time, Ross said.

Shoemaker was discovered by a friend who was staying at Shoemaker’s cabin, Ross said.

The friend had arrived at the cabin late Tuesday night. The kitchen light was on, but the friend went to bed, believing Shoemaker had already retired to his room for the evening, Ross said.

When the friend got up early Wednesday morning, he went looking for Shoemaker since he was not in the cabin, Ross said.

Trapped under the downed tree, volunteer firefighters were needed to remove a giant log to free his body, Ross said.

The last time anyone spoke with Shoemaker was Sunday night so investigators believe he died sometime Monday or Tuesday, Ross said.
